Dr. Teresa Marrero, member of the UNT Spanish Department, has been handpicked as one of 75 members to attend the Latina/o Theatre Commons, the first large-scale formal gathering of Latina/o theatre community since 1986. The event will take place at Emerson College in Boston from October 31-November 2, 2013.
Participants will be working together to find ways to advance the state of Latina/o theatre-making through sharing artistic, organizing and institutional wisdom. The conference will bring together veteran theatre makers, emerging artists, and independent and organizationally affiliated scholars, representing the diversity of the Latina/o experience across the country. Participants can trace their roots to both Spanish and non-Spanish speaking countries, identifying on the queer spectrum, and embracing Native or African heritages as well.
The Latina/o Theatre Commons is supported by HowlRound, which is committed to modeling a commons-based approach to advancing the health and impact of not-for-profit theatre. Some of the event sessions will be streamed live via HowlRound.
The convening is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Emerson College, Ford Foundation, The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, University sponsorships, and individual donors.
