Major in French

A major in French consists of a minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree as specified in the Academics section of the UNT catalog and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences requirements.

2021-2022 catalog

Major Requirements:
39 hours of foreign language, including:

  • FREN 1010 - Elementary French
  • FREN 1020 - Elementary French
  • FREN 2040 - Intermediate French
  • FREN 2050 - Intermediate French

Plus 27 semester hours of advanced work, including 9 hours in 4000-level courses or above; as listed in the current undergraduate catalog:

Placement or credit by examination may be used to satisfy FREN 1010, FREN 1020, FREN 2040, FREN 2050.

French Teacher Certification

Minor in French

A minor in French consists of a minimum of 21 semester hours in French, including 9 advanced hours. Demonstration of proficiency may be substituted for credit in courses equivalent to FREN 1010-FREN 2050. A minimum grade of C is required for a course to count toward the minor.

Professional French Certificate

This undergraduate academic certificate requires 12 hours of advanced French, including:

Two courses in professional French chosen from:

  • FREN 3090 - Professional French
  • FREN 3095 - French for Science and Technology
  • FREN 4080 - Business French
  • FREN 4085 - French Media and Currrent Events
  • FREN 4090 - French for Tourism
  • FREN 4400 - French Linguistics and Translation
  • FREN 4430 - French Social Media

Two other French courses at the 3000 or 4000 level

Notify the academic advisor of your major once you have completed the coursework, so they can list the certificate on your transcript. Note that transfer courses cannot apply to the Professional French Certificate (including study abroad courses). The Certificate cannot be awarded after graduation, so students must fill out the Undergraduate Academic Certificate posting form before they graduate (preferably the semester before). A copy of the form is available in the CLASS Advising office in GAB 220.
