Besides departmental scholarships, there are many other opportunities for funding your education. Below you will find links to various programs that provide money for graduate school, studying abroad and undergraduate degrees.

Because outside sources have different requirements, it's important to make sure you look at each scholarship individually to ensure you have all the necessary items to complete your application.

Some programs are contingent upon a student agreeing to work for the Federal Government after graduation, so be certain you understand all the aspects of each scholarship.

This list is not exhaustive; there are many other opportunities for scholarships. This is intended to be a starting point for students to begin looking for scholarships.

Scholarships

Graduate Studies

These scholarships are for students planning to go to graduate school. Check the websites for complete information.

  • Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship - awards up to $15,000. Can be used for a variety of language studies. Contact a local Rotary Club for application information.
  • Eiffel Scholarship - provides €1181 per month to support graduate students wanting to study in France. French language knowledge is required.
  • Gates Cambridge - provides the full cost of study to graduates students wishing to study at the University of Cambridge. Valid for those studying French, German, and Italian.
  • Pat Tillman Scholarship - provides funding for graduate students who served in the military post-9/11. Amount of the award varies. Can be used for any major.
  • Ford Foundation Fellowship - provides up to $20,000 for graduate study. Students must be interested in Higher Education instruction and planning to get a PhD. Can be used for any major.
  • Soros Fellowship - provides up to $90,000 over two years for graduate studies. Must be a foreign national who is a permanent resident, naturalized citizen or child of a naturalized citizen.
  • PEO International Peace Scholarship Fund - awards up to $10,000 for graduate studies of any major. For women only.
  • Blakemore Foundation Scholarships - awards up to full tuition and a stipend to study East Asian languages, including Chinese and Japanese. Students must hold a B.A. from an American university and have an advanced (at least 3 years of study) level of language proficiency. Students should be pursuing a career which promotes the use of these languages.
  • Borean Fellowships - provides up to $30,000 for domestic or overseas study in a foreign language. Requires one year of service in the federal government upon graduation.

Study Abroad

These scholarships are specifically for studying abroad. Some are program specific, so be sure to read the application information carefully.

  • Rhodes Scholarship - full cost of study awarded to students who wish to study at Oxford University. These scholarships are open to any degree offered at Oxford University.
  • Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship - awards up to $5,000. Students must be receiving the Federal Pell Grant. Valid for study on any accredited Study Abroad program. Program must last at least four weeks; programs traveling to more than one country are eligible as long as the student is in one country for at least four weeks.
  • IES Excellence in a Foreign Language Scholarship - awards up to $3,000. Must have a GPA of 3.3/4.0. Valid only for IES programs. Students are required to write a one-page essay about their experience upon return.
  • Annette Kade Scholarship - awards up to $2,000 for study in Austria, France, Germany or Switzerland on an IESP Study Abroad Program. Students must be nominated.
  • Foundation for Global Scholars - awards up to $2,500 for study or internship abroad. Students must be enrolled with a 2.5/4.0 GPA in order to apply.
  • Sant'Anna Institute-Sorrento Lingue Study Abroad Program - offered through the Order of Sons of Italy in America. Students must be US Citizens of Italian descent enrolled in their junior or senior year at a four-year, accredited university. Scholarships are for study at the Sant'Anna Institute-Sorrento Lingue Study Abroad Program in Sorrento, Italy. Provides for accommodation and excursions only- reduced course fees are not included.
  • National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) - provides a full scholarship for pre-college students interested in studying languages of interest to National Security. This includes Arabic, Chinese. Students must be in high school or recent high school graduates.
  • The Fund for Education Abroad General Scholarship - awards up to $10,000 to twenty students. Students must be undergraduates enrolled in a four-year US college or university and planning to study abroad for at least four weeks.
  • Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics - up to $5000. Students must be full-time junior or seniors at the time of application. Prize can be used for US tuition as well.
  • Critical Language Scholarships - provides full program cost, including airfare, tuition, room and board, health benefits and visa fees, for students to study a critical language abroad. Languages include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese. Over 600 scholarships are awarded each year. Recipients can earn up to a year's worth of college credit in only seven to ten weeks.
  • Boren Award for International Studies - awards up to $20,000 to study abroad on an accredited program. Students must be full-time at an accredited university. Requires one year of service in the federal government upon graduation.
  • Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships - provides placement as an English Language Assistant in a foreign country. Compensation varies by country. Open to many different languages.
  • Kathryn Davis Fellowships - provides full tuition, room and board for one summer program of a critical language at Middlebury College in Vermont. Can be used for beginner up to graduate level study. Valid for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and, in addition to Portuguese and Hebrew.

Language Specific Scholarships

These scholarships are for specific languages. They can be used for US tuition or study abroad, depending on the criteria. Unless noted, these scholarships are for undergraduate study.

Arabic

  • CASA- Center for Arabic Studies Abroad - provides full tuition, airfare and a stipend to support students wishing to study Arabic abroad. The program is generally held in the American University in Cairo, but due to political unrest, the program had temporarily been moved to the Qasid Institute in Jordan.
  • Qatar Scholarship - provides full tuition, airfare and a stipend for students to study Arabic abroad in Qatar. Program is a full year at Qatar University in Doha; academic credit is awarded.
  • William J. Clinton Scholarship at UAD - provides a tuition waiver for 5 courses for one term at the American University in Dubai plus dormitory housing. Students must be US Citizens enrolled in a full-time degree program at an accredited four-year university.

Chinese

  • Peter Wollitzer Asian Studies Scholarship- up to $5,000 towards a CIEE study abroad program in Asia Pacific.
  • Chinese Government Language Scholarships - provides a full scholarship, including a living allowance, medical and travel subsidy, for students who wish to study in China. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens who have completed at least two years of academic study.
  • Confucius Institute Scholarship - provides a full scholarship, including stipend and medical insurance, for students to study in China for a year or semester. Students must have some Chinese language knowledge.
  • AASCU Study Abroad Program Scholarships - provides full tuition, room and board, plus a stipend and health insurance, for a year of study at a Chinese university. Students must be a member of an AASCU college (UNT is a member) with a 3.0 GPA. Airfare is not included.

French

  • Alliance Francaise Philadelphie- Pierre C. Fraley Scholarship - up to $2500 to junior or senior college students studying French. Students must be French majors and applying to a summer program giving academic credit for university level courses. Courses must be given in French and can take place in the United State or a Francophone country, but must be approved by the AF scholarship committee.
  • Killam Fellowship Program - awards up to $10,000 for students to study in Canada for a semester or year. Also includes up to $500 for insurance and $1000 for educational field trips. Students must be fluent in French and English.
  • Teaching Assistantship in France - provides €790 per month for seven months to recent graduates wishing to teach English in France. Students must hold a BA by the time the contract begins; graduating seniors are eligible to apply.

German

  • DAAD Scholarship - provides €650 for up to ten months for students wishing to study abroad in Germany.
  • US Teaching Assistantship in Austria - provides up to €1100 for ten months to recent graduates wishing to teach English in Austria. Students must hold a BA by the time the contract begins; graduating seniors are eligible to apply.
